This time of year, tools to stay grounded, find your center, be intentional, as well as present and non-reactive, can be really useful.
I think we all can relate to those feelings at one time or another. The holidays bring up a lot of stuff… They stir up all that we wish we had, or wish was different. Monetary and relationship challenges tend to take center stage, or even loneliness, feeling like we don't have friends or family to turn to at all. I want you to feel empowered, grounded, and aligned this holiday season, so below are 6 simple, yet powerful tools and strategies you can use right away to keep your cool and stay calm during the whirlwind that is the end of the year. 1. PAUSE - Carve out moments to pause Take a long hot shower, enjoy a bubble bath, go for a walk, listen to soothing music, light a candle and turn down the lights, get a massage, pedicure, or even go the spa or sauna. If you have a regular meditation practice, make sure you commit to it (twice) daily for the holiday season. Add more mindfulness and meditation if you need to. Be present with whatever you do. The more present you are, the less stress you will have. And remember, the greatest gift you can give is your presence. 2. BREATHE - Connecting to your breath This is one of the simplest and fastest ways to calm down and bring you back to the present (when we are out of the present we become anxious or fearful). Breathe deeply for as long as you need to calm your emotions and allow the stream of thoughts in your mind to soften and get quieter. Listen to soothing music, dim the lights, and just keep breathing. 3. CENTER - Find your center When you feel yourself getting off track, your buttons being pushed, feeling anxious, frustrated or fearful, take a moment to ground by coming back to your breath and drop inside. Connect to your heart and feel your center. Come back to you. You can also take a walk outside (intentionally) to help ground you. 4. ALIGN - Stay aligned with your highest and best good Allow yourself to say no to things that don't feel like they will add to your life force. Set healthy boundaries and get clear on what YOU need for YOU. Claim it, speak from your heart, and share your truth. Honor your needs and make sure to give yourself what you need so that you can show up and be present for others. 5. CONNECT - Take time to connect deeply Don't go to holiday parties and stay on the surface of life. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, share deeper, and connect deeper. Get to know someone you normally wouldn't talk to. Keep it real. Open up and invite others into your circle. Remember, we need each other and there are many people out there who feel very alone during the holidays, so reach out when you can. 6. PLAY - Make sure to play Laugh and walk through the streets with childlike wonder. Play with the box, not the toy. Be appreciative and infuse your heart and soul with joy. Dance in the living room after dinner, run through the snow, watch funny movies (I would recommend The Vacation if you haven't seen it)! Just make sure to bring more play into your holiday. Lighten things up a bit and don't take it all so seriously... Life is meant to be enjoyed! Don't let this holiday season pass you by without remembering to pause, tune in and be intentional with everything you do. Be clear about your intentions (desired outcome, reason for giving, etc.) and hold those intentions close to your heart. It’s so easy to get caught up in obligations, entertaining, and to-do lists, that we forget our own self-care and find ourselves stressed out, triggered, and then totally drained by the time the new year starts. A question I often ask my clients is, "what is your point of focus?" If you are looking for or focused on what isn't right, you’re going to find more things that aren't right. When you focus on what is working, you find more things that are working. This is especially important to remember in relationships. Whatever you believe, you are right and you will find evidence to back up those beliefs! If you believe you are telling yourself that your partner isn't showing up for you, you will find evidence to back it up. Attention + energy = focus = your experience of reality. What might happen if you shift your focus to how they are showing up and what they are doing instead? What might the ripple of that be (it is all goodness, I promise)? Imagine for a moment all of the blessings in your life... ✨ Think only about what is good and right. ✨ Find things to appreciate. ✨ Let your heart be filled with happy thoughts. Take a deep breath and breathe those blessings into your heart. Allow yourself to feel just how lucky you are to be alive today. To be living and breathing one more day... If you've been following me for a while you probably know Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love how the focus is preparing a delicious family meal and coming together in gratitude and appreciation for each other and life in general. On that note, I wanted to share just how grateful I am that you are here. I am truly, deeply grateful, thank you! And I don't mean that in a cheesy, cliche way, it really does mean the world to me that you are a part of this community. It's because of you that I keep going and feel encouraged to continue. It fills my heart with joy that you are on this path of awakening and inner work with me. I truly believe that this is the most important work we can all be doing both individually and collectively to make this world a better place... so once again, thank YOU! Just in case you didn't know, today is also a FULL MOON during mercury retrograde... double whammy! Full moon energy often equals heightened emotions, drama, and a bit of chaos where the hidden aspects of your life that aren't working are brought to light. Add mercury retrograde into the mix and you could potentially be dealing with some major crazy at the dinner table! Check it out: "Mercury retrograde in Sagittarius can make everyone doubly tactless. And remember... What you focus on you experience more of so immediately shift your focus to something good... look around you, practice gratitude. What can you appreciate about this moment? What you appreciate, appreciates. Can you even eventually find humor in the chaos? When I take a step back and witness the crazy, instead of engage with the crazy, and I shift my perspective to see how everyone is just reacting out of their own fears and insecurities, I can have greater compassion AND find the humor in the insanity. One last thought before you finish up your holiday preparations. What if this were your last meal on earth? How would you want to show up for yourself and for others? What would you want them to know? I know that's a heavy question but it can shift your focus fast and drop you back into what matters most. As we move into the holidays, become more aware as things tend to resurface that need to be cleared, so that you can move through the season with grace and ease.
You don’t want to drag unhealthy situations, relationships or unresolved trauma into the future so always remain grateful when the opportunity arises to shine the light on the darkness and clear, clear, clear! This will prepare you to move forward lighter and brighter. As your light shines, you will become a beacon for others to find their way out of the darkness and raise your vibration with each breath you take! Stress, overwhelm, and pressure around the holiday season can be challenging no matter how long you are on the journey of self-discovery and awakening. There will always be another layer to move through, which is a part of the beauty of this life! In times like these it's important to be really gentle with yourself, rest more, reflect more, laugh more and play more. It only takes is split second to choose a different response to any situation and change the outcome of your relationships and the quality of your life... Set an intention to use this method and keep your cool during the holiday season! STEP #1: STOP – stop yourself before you open your mouth and take a deep breath STEP #2: DROP (IN) – close your eyes, connect to your heart STEP #3: LISTEN – tune into how you would really like to respond, ask yourself if your response is loving The next time you're about to react, try this out and see what happens. At this time of year, practices that ground you in your center are more important than ever.
This time of year tends to bring with it a rollercoaster of emotion including joy, connection, gratitude, excitement, frustration, sadness, disappointment and grief. There are plenty of opportunities to get knocked off your center and sucked into the drama, chaos and intensity of diverse opinions and expectations. (check out next week's how to “bless the messenger” and selfishly use these juicy exchanges as opportunities for your own growth, healing and evolution!) The more grounded, centered and at peace you are, the more loving, kind and compassionate you can be — both toward yourself and others. And who doesn’t want to be seen as the Zen Master in their family? With all of the stress, overwhelm, and pressure around the holiday season, practices that ground you deeply are key to keeping the peace and staying with you. Let me repeat that to emphasize the importance of what I just said… These practices are key to keeping the peace and STAYING WITH YOU. If you ever find yourself in the role of the Fixer, Caretaker, Mediator, Rescuer, Victim or Martyr, this grounding and boundary work is even more important! 🙋🏼♀️ Here is a simple yet powerful question to ask if you find yourself rushing to the rescue ... Whose business am I in? My own, yours or God’s? — most likely, it’s not “yours” to solve so stay with you! The more grounded you are, the less likely you are to get triggered by life. One of my first birthdays after I moved back to the United States I had dinner with a new group of friends, my now husband and my sister. At some point they shared what they appreciate about and see in me (best birthday gift EVER for this words of affirmation lady!). Many shared how much they loved being around my calming, grounded energy… that being around me helped them breathe a little deeper. My sister piped up and declared “she wasn’t always like this!”. We both laughed and then with tears in her eyes she said how inspiring I was to her as she had witnessed firsthand the power of inner work and of practices that ground you in your center. I was no longer that fiery, easily triggered young woman, I was grounded in my sense of self and rooted so deeply that it would take a hurricane to knock me down.Things don’t upset me like they used to. I don’t take things personally like I used to and if I do, I know how to get myself back to a place of peace. I want this for you too… I want you be stuck in traffic and be at peace, to deal with your politically incorrect family member with love, to not get triggered by the changes in your family, the unmet expectations you have or those placed upon you. I want you to realize there is more to life then the little triggers, annoyances or even big upsets and when you invest in yourself, making self-care a priority and get grounded deeply, there isn’t much that can throw you off. If I find myself in a funk and feeling “off”, I know I alone have the power to shift it and always keep in mind, inner peace is just a thought/choice away. Here are a few suggestions to help you get and stay grounded in your center…
When I move my physical body stuck energy flows, which helps me to raise up out of the funk. I also really benefit from hot packs, baths, high vibrational foods, cuddling, quiet time, meditation, and journaling. How do you move through tough times or handle difficult situations or people? Last week, I arrived home from spending two weeks in Hong Kong, and one thing I love about being in different countries is meeting people from so many backgrounds. We always find a common thread that unites us. My circle of global friends (and new clients) has now expanded to Hong Kong and it fills my heart. I was there spending time with and loving on one of my dear girlfriends who is undergoing treatment for stage 4 cancer. As emotional as it is, she is hopeful and remaining positive, as am I. My friend wanted me to be there for her last two weeks of treatment before returning back to Thailand (where she and I used to be neighbors and she ran a wedding planning business) and then back home to New Zealand to be with her family. She used to live in Hong Kong and has found out through her illness just how many people love and appreciate her. We had plans to meet up with her innermost circle of friends over the two weeks so she could say goodbye before leaving and update them with her situation. When you live a soul aligned life, the synchronicities and divine appointments that just happen are absolutely magical. You meet EXACTLY the right people, at the right time and the right place. Life brings you together. It's purposeful and you feel it. One afternoon, my girlfriend and I ended up spontaneously at her friends house for dinner. A random group of people ended up spending a very long evening together, laughing, deeply connecting and sharing about what is real and what matters. I ended up grabbing lunch one day and sat at a table with a sweet young woman who had recently moved from Kuala Lumpur. She ended up sharing with me the story of her sisters death a few years back to cancer. It was a healing conversation for both of us. During the last week, I reconnected with someone who I met 10 years ago when I was opening an Aman Spa in London. We just happened to be in Hong Kong at the EXACT same time. I felt a connection with her then and still do. I am being guided to mentor her once again as a big sister. These are just a few of the examples of divine synchronicity that happened during my trip... all the way up to a 10 hour delay on my flight home and spending the majority of that time connecting with another Heather who is totally a part of my tribe. Throughout these various encounters and also spending time with my friend, one of the things that stood out was just how important it is to be present, I mean really present with those around you. When you allow yourself to be fully present with and honoring of another human being on their journey, it is an incredible gift. So here is my suggestion because I know we all need to be reminded occasionally... The next time you're with friends or family stop and check in with yourself every once in a while and reflect... "Am I really present? Or, am I distracted by my to-do list or the vortex that is my phone?" If you are, that's okay. Put your phone down, look up, look around you and get present again. Real, heartfelt, meaningful connection is what we all crave and that happens face-to-face. ❤ Also, take some time to check in with yourself about living a soul-aligned life... The more you live from your core; grounded, connected, awakened, and aligned with higher spiritual principles, the more magical life becomes. When you take time to pause, tune in, and listen, you will discover a new richness to life. You become the Alchemist, able to transform the most difficult situation into something better. You grow from everything that comes, even if your growth is to simply learn to be kind and give yourself some grace. |
